All Packed Up and Ready to Go!
It was brisk work for GEP supporters who turned up to load the container shipment bound for Nkwanta. on what has to be one of the hottest May weekends in recent years. A big thank you to the 20 or more volunteers who helped on Saturday afternoon and to everyone who donated items.
The warehouse in Pembury, Kent was stacked high with your donations which all had to be transferred to the container. Amongst the helpers were students from Tunbridge Wells Girls' Grammar School who are due to go out to Ghana in October where they will be able to see for themselves just what a difference the shipment of resources makes to the community of Nkwanta.
Into the container went 70 school desks, 60 school chairs, piles of school text books, heaps of sports equipment, a plethora of bicycles and a many other things besides, including some lawnmowers and computers.
The container is now waiting at Tilbury docks to be loaded onto the vessel "Grande Nigeria" which sets sail on the 23rd of May. All being well it should arrive at the port of Tema in Ghana on the 7th June, from whence - once it has been cleared through customs - it will start the final stage of its journey, overland to Nkwanta.
We are very grateful to everyone who has helped in gathering together all the donations, in particular Rich and Jane Tribe who offered the use of the warehouse and managed the incoming donations. Also, Mike and Dawn Smith, who brought in all the chairs and desks – and dismantled the latter ready for loading!
The loading team experienced both relief and a great sense of ahievement as they watched the container starting off on its long journey to Nkwanta.
